Blog EntryHow do I disciple my kidsJun 14, '07 3:29 AM
for everyone
Growing a family is very similar to discipleship.  Discipleship in Victory has four E's. What are the Four E's?

Evangelize
Establish
Equip
Empower

Part One:

How Do We Evangelize Our Children?

a. Evangelism is all about sharing and goodness.
Its not hard core preaching that wins our kids to Christ (or else they won't understand it).  No, its about being nice and kind to them.  Its not just about the hard truth, rather its the sharing of the truth covered with all the good news of God's grace and kindness.  Wisdom is essential in finding effective ways to share God's love.  I don't share the gospel to my kids using the fires of hell and the "turn or burn" method of evangelism.  Its temporary.  They might decide out of fear instead of gratefulness and love.

As a  dad, the first step I did was to be a good example.  I need to become a person who is full of grace and kindness.  I want my kids to know that their dad is generous.  I also made it clear that I will not keep from them whatever is good.  They know I am 100% for them.

I do not charge my kids for staying an extra night stay in my room.
Nor reprimand them for getting extra rice when they feel so hungry.
When the glass falls from the dining table, I don't deduct the expense from their allowances.
I just want to be a good dad.  I that's all I want.

The following verses showed me that God's prime way of attracting sinners is through his loving kindness.

Rom. 2:4 "... God’s kindness leads you toward repentance.
Psa. 100:5 For the LORD is good and his love endures forever...
Psa. 145:9 The LORD is good to all; he has compassion on all he has made.

b. Evangelism means storytelling.
My kids love to hear stories.  I became a storyteller when they were about 3 years old. From then on, I had to learn how to master the craft of suspense, humor, drama and theatre.  Later, I studied how to speak, sing, dance and do crazy stuff in order to convey the message I was reading.

The first book I used was William Bennett's book of Virtues.  Started with short stories from Aesop's fables then they were demanding for more and longer stories with 5 - 8 pages each story.  Then the Moral compass, and  a lot of stories from the bible.

c. Evangelism means spending time with them.  The greatest memories in our family are usually those unexpected moments.  They are the "AHA" moments we shared together without being so "intentional", "planned" and "deliberate" (except for vacations).  I never remember anyone of my kids accepting the Lord when i was sharing the "one 2 one" for kids.  Rather, they accepted the Lord through spontaneous moments: when they are just in our bedroom about to sleep, (the other one) through casual talks, their other in the middle of the night (dreaming about fires and darkness).

I guess my kids decided to accept Jesus as the Lord of their lives because they connected all the dots. They were never forced into it.  It was the dots of our stories, the dinner times together, our visit to church every sundays, our friends, their friends, sunday school teachers, and so many more.

There is not one reason, nor a formula for the salvation of our kids, it will come as we spend moment by moment, week by week, year to year with them.  THEN THEY CONNECT THE DOTS.

My goal is that when we all leave earth, we will all be together spending eternity with Jesus.  NOBODY LEFT BEHIND.

Josh. 24:15b "... But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.”
