Asking my kids what they want to be in the future is a recurring exercise in our family.

I am constantly assessing if they are looking towards the future and is aware that schooling and discipleship is very important to be successful in life.

David (14)  is so sure he wants to be in the computer field.  He wants to work in APPLE, in Cupertino , California, and work for Steve.  He likes the idea of having Steves as his main leader in life.

Daniela (10) on the other hand wants nothing but baking.  She is passionately into kitchen stuff, food and dining tables.

One day Gabrielle came to me and expressed her desire to be a super model, an actress or a fashion designer.  I was shocked and also excited.  The typical mindset in me is reacting that she needs to have a Bachelors degree in either Science or Arts or Engineering or Medicine. Gabrielle is our family's most consistent, loyal and task oriented person.  Give her something to do and for sure she will get it done (very much like my wife).

So what do we do?

As any good hearted parent and homeschooler - we give what she will need in the future--- we gave her lots of english and grammar and communication exercises.  Sometimes she hates it.  Sometimes she gets bored and sometimes she feels its too much.  But since she is a finisher --- it always gets done.

You asked why we do that?????

Let me say that knowledge of English is one thing that we can't do away with because we belong to a third-world country. If we were as rich as Saudi Arabia, we don't need to be as good in English anymore as evidenced by what I have experienced here.

pastor bernard! this video was so painful to watch!!! i don't get why they chose the ones who weren't exactly the sharpest tool in the shed o_O

Life is short, let’s live, love and laugh. Hahaha. We can only laugh, because twas really funny.
But ridiculing a fellow Pinoy like her because of her Barok English is not good. (Yes, Christian yata ako!)
Let’s put ourselves on her shoes. Could we ramp like she could in a sleek 2-piece in front of a million people (coliseum and TV) nationwide and speak on a mic and show some “scripted confidence” with a candidly childish grin on her face? I doubt it.

Intelligence is overrated indeed. If the measure of every contestant’s wit and confidence is based on how she answers the question/s with sense in English, can they just title and promote it as “Ms. Philippines” instead of “Binibining Pilipinas”?

I heard a comment from someone else...

He said "YOU CANT ANSWER A QUESTION THAT YOU DONT KNOW".
So I thought, maybe that's the reason why she faltered.

It should not be about the fact that she can't speak proper English. It's about the fact that she tried to when she could have very well expressed herself in our own native tongue. The downside with us Filipinos is that we try so hard to speak English, we lose our sense of nationalism.

I still believe that learning to speak and write proper English is essential. But the more important lesson is learning to embrace our own language. In all our efforts to teach our kids proper English, hindi na sila marunong mag-Tagalog ng maayos.

Bingo!
"In all our efforts to teach our kids proper English, hindi na sila marunong mag-Tagalog NANG maayos.
Even us parents are not perfect in Filipino.

Lesson learned, confidence still wins. People can forgive mistakes as long as they see you tried giving your best. She won!

i feel sorry for her... yeah, but she did her utmost best and she won. and come to think of it, she may have certain qualities in her which we do not even see. :) remember Antoine de Saint-Exupery as he said:

"It s only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye. "

let's give the girl a chance! :)

Agree. But was she actually the most confident? Did she win fair and square?

I posted this not to make fun of her... rather to emphasize to my kids and other parents out there the value training our kids communication skills. Let's start while they are young, one day an opportunity like this might happen and they will definitely Honor God by having a great face, great confidence and great mind.

yes, that's right.pastor Bernard. absolutely. not to make fun of her.no one is perfect, at all. we all have our inadequacies and indeed, God teaches us lessons in every possible way He can. :)

she was overwhelmed by stage fright...her thoughts came out as mumblings...a simple mistake in a big event, it may mark as her best and worst day (of her life). But i hope she will forgive herself and the others about this incident. I know she will work hard in improving herself and i also hope she will win in the Ms. World pageant!

ptr. B, "Ken Lee" na lang ipalit mo sa vid. :)

question, how do you write that famous expression of yours..."THE? THUH? THA?" better talaga when you deliver it in person, hehehe.

Siguro kung inamin na lang niya na hirap siya sa English at sinagot ang tanong in Tagalog eh baka siya pa ang naging Miss Universe. Just my two cents.
